Testing Procedure for ADHD
Children
Testing for ADHD in children (ages 6-17) requires clinical observation as well as at least two sources of information. This is typically gathered from parents and teachers. Testing information is gathered from the Conners 3rd Edition (Conners 3).
The Conners 3 is a comprehensive assessment for school-age children (ages 6-17 years) primarily used to assist in diagnostic formulation for ADHD. This assessment also screens for comorbid disorders, such as oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder, and helps to identify children with clinical symptoms in educational settings. Forms will also be sent by the parent/guardian to be completed by at least one teacher (two is preferred) who are familiar with the student’s behaviors and symptoms that may be present in the classroom. During the assessment, the parent/guardian will be responsible to complete a collection of other screening forms that rate symptoms and behaviors, while the Clinician works with the Child to gather other needed information.
During the final appointment, the results of all testing material will be reviewed, any possible diagnoses will be discussed/explained, and any recommendations will be explored.
Adults
Testing for ADHD in Adults requires a multistep process to screen for/rule out multiple other possible diagnoses as well as looking for symptoms/behaviors consistent with ADHD including anxiety, depression, and mood disorders.
Testing Procedure for Autism
Testing for autism is based on age and language ability. It requires observation and task completion in several areas looking at overall communication, social interaction, repetitive behaviors/restricted interests, imagination and creativity. The actual assessment appointment on average takes 60-90 minutes and uses the ADOS-2 Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2).
The ADOS-2 is a standardized behavior observation tool used to accurately assess and diagnose autism spectrum disorders across age, developmental level, and language skills. The parent/guardian will also be required to complete several additional screening forms associated with the assessment. It is requested that at least one parent be present through the assessment process and that siblings are not brought into the assessment if avoidable as the distraction can make getting accurate results more difficult.
During the final appointment, the results of all testing material will be reviewed, any possible diagnoses will be discussed/explained, and recommendations will be explored.
