A few years ago, before I started back to school, I spent my free time making hairclips, bows and other accessories for little girls. It was something I really enjoyed after having two boys and now having a daughter to dress up in girly things.
A while back I was cleaning and moved the couch to reveal many of the kids lost “treasures”. Everything was buried under a mountain of dust bunnies (obviously cleaning under the couch should be moved up a little higher on the regular to-do list!) Among the long-lost items, I found my daughter’s missing tiara hair clip.
This tiny crown, made for my little princess, had several black marks on it and looked, well, tarnished. It made me think about us, as daughters of the Living King and princesses in our own right, and how we must constantly be on guard to prevent “tarnish” from building up on our own crowns.
We must be ever watchful for the spots that will cover up His shine and sparkle! We must stay clean of doubt, fear, harsh words and thoughts. We must be on constant guard against jealousies and anger. We must protect ourselves from confusion, complacency, or anything else in our lives that keep us from behaving as God’s child. Anything that would prevent the world from seeing our Father when they look at us.
How do we keep our crown shining in His glory? By staying close to Him! Communicating with Him, thinking about Him and His ways. We keep the sparkle in our crown by staying in His Word! I have been fascinated by Psalm 119 this month. The beautiful way David describes the Word of God, the power he saw in it, I just haven’t been able to get enough of that chapter. David recognized the importance of constantly being in God’s Word.
He saw God’s Word as something to keep him on the right path. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Verse 105)
He admitted that if he could stay walking in the ways of God he would live a life where he would not be ashamed. “Oh, that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes! Then I would not be
David knew God’s Word would keep his life clean from everything that could lead it to tarnish. “How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word.” (Verse 9)
If we want a life that sparkles, if we want to keep the tarnish away from our crowns, then we need to recognize the power of God’s word too. We should follow the lead of David and stay focused on God’s Word.
“I have rejoiced in the way of Your testimonies,
As much as in all riches.
I will meditate on Your precepts,
And contemplate Your ways.
I will delight myself in Your statutes;
I will not forget Your word.”
David saw the value of God’s Word as much as all riches and delighted himself in God’s Law. He didn’t want to forget the words which he recognized would bring the most benefit to his life.
Let’s keep our lives polished. Keep working hard and never let our guard down, never let anything build up in our life that keeps us from shining our brightest. Let’s do that by staying focused on God’s Word. Memorize it. Think on it even when you can’t be sitting and reading it. Pray and stay connected with the one whose words can change lives!
May you be encouraged to meditate on God’s Word and find delight!
