Last night my wonderful husband gave a sermon as he does every Sunday and the question he left us all with is a powerful one. “What do you seek?” It was a simple question at first glance but one that holds so much depth.
This question was first asked by Jesus in John 1:38 to the disciples of John who had started following behind Him. “What do you seek?” A question they answered regarding interest in Jesus’ current living arrangements, but how do we answer it? They sought a physical answer, possibly one that would help them know where to stay as they were looking to become disciples of Him as master, teacher, and guide.
“What do you seek?” Do you seek a physical answer to this question? Do you feel that your life is spinning in circles as you seek financial security, that new job, a new house, a new car? Do you feel that your time is eaten up by seeking things in this life that are so close you can almost touch them?
“What do you seek?” This question runs so much deeper than that of what is physical. It is a question that asks us to search inside and really look to understand what drives us, what is our purpose, and our goals. “What do you seek?” A question that searches for more than surface-level answers, but answers that guide us each and every day.
David knew the answer to the question in his life. In Psalm 27:4, David writes “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord All the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple.”
David had one desire, one thing he sought all the days of his life: to be in the house of God. David sought God, His temple, His word, His beauty, and His closeness. All the days of his life, which anyone who studies the life of David can see, he sought God. David sought God in the shepherd’s field, on the battlefield, on the run for his life, and in his king’s abode.
What do we seek? Do we seek God? Do we seek His presence, His wisdom, His way? Each day when we arise do we seek to live for Him and choose His will over our own? Do we seek His purpose for our lives or do we waste time trying to live for this world with its lies, broken promises, and empty dreams?
“What do you seek?” Jesus always knew how to ask the right questions and always gave the right answers. In John 1:39, He responds again to the disciples “Come and See.” Jesus is and always will be who we should be seeking. He wants us engaged with Him, following Him. He wants us to see who He is and what He is about. He wants us to experience life with Him, not just to hear about it from the sidelines.
“What do you seek?” Is it the Lord who brings peace this world will never know? Is it the Lord who gives hope of eternal life? Is it the Lord who offers complete forgiveness and a home in His presence? “Come and See” Jesus. He truly offers a life worth seeking!
