Just Too Much

It’s just too much. Some days it is more than I can bear. To look around at this world and see it everywhere. Too much pain and sadness, too much hate and anger, too much selfishness and pride. It’s just Too Much!

Families around the world are hurting. People from every walk of life, every continent, every tax bracket, every race, everywhere are in pain because of this cursed world we live in. Too often it is pain caused by sin; sin committed by self or others. I look around and I feel the pain that David described in the book of Psalms.

“Rivers of water run down from my eyes,
Because men do not keep Your law.”
Psalm 119:136

As sisters, as members of the Lord’s body, we look around at the pain and problems of the world and we feel all alone at times. We feel like Elijah!

In 1 Kings 19, Elijah finds himself running for his life from Jezebel, the wicked wife of one of the most wicked kings ever. She had already killed so many prophets of God and swore to Elijah she would not rest until she had done the same to him.

He spent forty days and forty nights hiding in a cave on Mt. Horeb (Sinai). He was hiding from the awful world he saw around him. A world that did not appear to want anything to do with God and was hostile to those who proclaimed faith in Him. But God came to him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” (verse 9)

God was concerned for Elijah and did not forget about him alone on that mountain, even with Elijah’s fear and doubt.

Elijah answered, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.” (verse 10)

He felt so alone. He saw what the world was doing to the believers and he was afraid for his life. This is us. We see the world around us and we feel alone. We fear for our lives. We fear for the lives of our families. The lives of our children. We see the hurt and the pain and the sin and we say it is just too much for us to bear and we want to run and hide.

But just like He was there for Elijah, God has comfort for us! First God reminded Elijah that He was with him. He was in the small voice right beside Elijah that said he was not alone. (Verses 11-12) God tells him he is not alone in the fight for God!

Then the Lord said to him: “Go, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, anoint Hazael as king over Syria. 16 Also you shall anoint Jehu the son of Nimshi as king over Israel. And Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel Meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. 17 It shall be that whoever escapes the sword of Hazael, Jehu will kill; and whoever escapes the sword of Jehu, Elisha will kill. 18 Yet I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him.”

1 Kings 19:15-18

God told Elijah to seek out people who would walk along beside him and fight with him. He also encouraged Elijah that there were many who were still faithful to God, even though Elijah couldn’t see it.

We need to be encouraged in this as well. When we see everything going on around us and it feels like we are losing the battle, remember God’s words to Elijah. Seek out those close to you who you can lean on and who will fight along side you! Those who will support you and be there with you through whatever you are facing. Turn to them and realize you are stronger together!

Remember as well that the Lord’s body is bigger than what we can see in our small corner of the world! Remember that He has warriors all around this world who are fighting along side you who have not bowed their knee to anyone other than God in heaven.

Be encouraged, my sister! Know that even though the hardships and fighting in this world seem just too much for one person, that you are not alone! Remember the words of God to Elijah. And remember the words of Jesus to you!

“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” John 16:33

Jesus acknowledged that this world is going to be hard. That there is going to be tribulation, pain, hardships, and fights that we are going to have to endure. “But” He said, “be of good cheer.” Despite of all this be encouraged that you are not alone! He give you His peace to hold to, to strengthen you. He walks beside you and whispers to you the greatest words of all, “I have overcome the world!”

When the world is just too much, remember that He has already conquered it! He has overcome death, overcome sin, overcome pain. Turn to Him and be empowered. Turn to those in your circle and be encouraged to keep fighting and always remember you are never alone!
