In The Morning I Will

I am not a morning person, never have been. I freely admit it. I would rather stay up until 4am getting things accomplished than to have to get up an extra hour. Monday mornings are especially hard because Sunday is usually a busy day for us and leave us feeling exhausted.

Now while I can get up at whatever time is needed depending on the day’s schedule, it typically takes me a while to get fully awake and ready to face the day. I am slow moving and slow thinking of a morning, though I wish I could learn to improve this.

Recently, as I have been reading scripture, there has been something that keeps sticking out to me. So many followers of God rose early to be with Him or to follow and obey Him. Here are just a few examples.

  • Abraham rose early in the morning to go before the Lord. (Genesis 19:27, 22:3)
  • Jacob rose early in the morning and set up a memorial to God. (Genesis 28:18)
  • Moses rose early in the morning and built an altar to God. (Exodus 24:4)
  • Joshua rose early in the morning to prepare for the people to cross the Jordan to the promised land. (Joshua 6:12)
  • Elkanah and Hannah rose early in the morning and worshiped the Lord. (1 Samuel 1:19)
  • Jesus rose early in the morning to go to the temple and teach the people. (John 8:2)
  • The women went to the tomb of Jesus early in the morning. (Luke 24:1)

These people all saw fit to rise early and get started with their days, beginning with a focus on God. Even the Virtuous Woman of Proverbs 31 rose early to tend to the needs of her family.

“She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household,” Proverbs 31:15

David rose early in the morning to cry out to God for help.

“I rise before the dawning of the morning, And cry for help; I hope in Your word.” Psalm 119:147

There seems to be a big lesson for me in each of these examples. There should be something to look forward to each morning. Not only is there a new opportunity to focus on God and but it is also a chance to try again. I was recently reminded that there is something to look forward to with the dawning of each new day. Someone shared on social media that it is a good thing that we only have to experience each day once.

Every day is a new beginning. Every day is a chance to start over. Every morning puts the past behind us; with its troubles, with its pain, with its failures or problems. Every morning is a chance to rise, cry out to God and hope in His word, looking to Him to guide us through whatever the day brings.

God’s compassions are new every morning. His mercy toward us never fails. Every morning is a chance for me to be reminded to God’s faithfulness and to place our hope in Him anew!

“Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness. 24 “The Lord is my portion,”
says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!”
Lamentations 3:22-24

May my prayer and yours be that He causes us to hear His lovingkindness every morning. I may not jump out of bed in the morning, but in the morning I will renew my focus on God and remember that His love is always there for me. In the morning I will thank Him for all His blessings. In the morning I will search for ways to serve Him.

I pray this encourages any other non-morning people, and morning people alike, to remember the power of a new morning. May your mornings be filled with the knowledge that God loves you and may we all walk in His ways!

“Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning,
For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk,
For I lift up my soul to You.” Psalm 143:8
